A five Acreage of Elgon Teak Plantation to mature after 20 years. The objectives are to produce high quality timber in trees of good growth and stem form hardwood timber. This is for retirement income. As well to ensure use of the acreage to avoid absentee landlord penalties by the government for a citizen living abroad and not using the land actively.
The Elgon Teak seedlings in the nursery beds. Ready for transplanting.A mature tree may measure between 30 to 45 cubic metres. The wood is largely used in building bridges and for the manufacture of boats, among others. It is in high demand both locally and internationally. A seedling costs $ 0.80 from Maseno ICRAF National Agroforestry Research Centre.
The acreage is situated in Kakamega County, Western Province of Kenya. This region is
tropical rainforest area. Approximately 65km west of Kakamega Forest:Kenya 's only tropical rainforest and is said to be Kenya's last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once spanned the continent.
The Kakamega County is very wet, with an average of 1500 mm – 1950 mm of rain per year. Rainfall is heaviest in April-August ("long rains"), with a slightly drier June and a second peak roughly in August to November ("short rains"). January and February are the driest months. Temperature is fairly constant throughout the year, ranging between 17c - 30c

The main objective of the project is to produce high quality timber of the much sought Elgon Teak wood on commercial scale. The income shall be used as a retirement and investment income as well as Income support of his son and daughter.
As well this is to counter the risk of absentee landlord as stipulated in the Kenyan Constitution.
The trees shall be tendered in accordance with the best practices and benchmarked with other known organic timber production system in the world. This is to ensure acceptance in high quality timber market. Target is to harvest approximately 1 metre diameter trunk and 20 metres in length.
Risks and Assumptions
I. The risk of bush fires from the neighbouring acreages will be addressed by having clear edges along the perimeter of the plantation from initial planting stage. Plus a clear demarcation by a chain link fence. As well later in their stage the trunks shall be applied Magnesium Oxide.
II. Likelihood of lack of Proper farm management because of sponsor being far away from the farm. The mitigation is trees do not need close monitoring.
III. Misappropriations of the seasonal inter-cropped crops harvest and related income.
Objectives’:
1 High quality timber bench marked against the best in the world, thus easy of marketability of the product.
2 High quality inter-cropping of Watermelon, Sunflower, Hay and Maize. With assumption the trees and agricultural crops are sufficiently mixed to provide timber, food and income for the project.
3 Best in class care of the trees with continuous monitoring and organic fertilization.
4 Authorized, disciplined harvesting with state of the art tools to deliver world class timber.
5 Enhancing the rain catchment for the great lakes region by the Lake Victoria and curbing the deforestation in Kenya.
Milestones
1) 1 -2 years planting of the trees, replacement of the dead trees and mulching with no other inter-cropping to ensure stability of the trees.
2) 3-4 years inter cropping with watermelon in the months of September –March, and Maize in the Month of April to August.
3) 5-20 years Inter-cropping with Hay, while watermelons planted on the edges only.
4) The income from the other crops will be used run the year round operations of the farm.
Estimated Budget
2,500 Seedlings @ Can $ 0.80 = 2,050. The extra $50 is for replacing seedlings that die.
Land preparation (tree holes) = 400
Manure and Mulching = 850
Annual operations Costs 600(19) =11,400 (Assuming other crops do not yield and generate income
Harvesting
Total = 14,700
The project Manager shall be in-charge of all operations of the plantation whole year round. Reporting directly to the Sponsor and any other individual as the Sponsor may direct from time to time. These operations would include Staffing, managing, harvesting of the other crops.
